Moving Checklist

Moving can be an extremely stressful time, especially when you are unsure how to go about getting all of your stuff from point A to point B.  Sometimes it seems that you have collected so much stuff over the years that you could never possibly move it all.  Fortunately, there are methods for ensuring that your move goes smoothly and without any problems. The best method to organize and plan you move is to create a moving checklist.
Before you being all of the critical steps of moving, create your moving checklist and ensure that you include the following items to make the most efficient moving checklist possible:
Sort Your Stuff – Without creating any lists or notes, just look through your home and make mental notes of how many things you own and will need to take with you.  This is important because the more things you have, the more movers and time you will need when it comes time to move.
Order Supplies – Your move will require boxes, packing tape, and cushioning to ensure safe travel for all of your items.  Make sure to order supplies well in advance of your move.
Choose a Moving Company – If you cannot move all of your things yourself, you will require a professional moving company to help.  You must contact moving companies at least 6 weeks in advance of your move.
Start Packing – Start as early as possibly by packing items you do not immediately need.  Start with seasonal items that are not in use.
Label – It is very important that you label all boxes and packages, so that when it comes time to unpack, you know which boxes should go where, without having to open all of them.
Eliminate Unneeded Items – Any items that you do not need should be thrown away.  This can be a difficult step for a lot of people, but try to get rid of as much as you can before moving. The lighter your move, the better your move will be.
Move Items Early – If at all possible, begin moving unneeded items to the new location as early as possible.  If you can, bring large items before the move in date.
Complete all of the “Paperwork” – Before your move, conduct a change of address at your local post office.  Take the time off from work if needed and finalize the documents for you new home.
Move Day – On move day, have a plan of action ready, with room for time changes.  Estimate when the movers will arrive, how long they will take to load your items, and travel times to the new home.  Make sure you know where everyone will be and their contact information, to ensure that the transition is smooth.
Sort Your Items at the New Location – Once at the new location, ensure that boxes and large items are where they should be.  If they are not, make sure the movers take the items to their proper locations before they leave.
Unpack and Enjoy – Once finished, unpack all of the items and place them in their new homes.  Unpacking can sometimes take longer than packing, so don’t be concerned if you find you are “living out of boxes” for a while.
